Embodying a Growth Mindset

Learning about different leadership styles over the past eight weeks has taught me so much about myself. Every person has a leadership style that aligns with their strengths, waiting for them to embody. Each individual possesses qualities that can positively impact those around them. Leadership takes many forms, and one of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that you don’t always have to be the one leading from the front. A leader can also be someone who quietly observes, absorbs knowledge, and supports others in making the right decisions. There are many ways to lead, and a leader can have various roles depending on the needs of the situation. Whether it's leading through example, being a mentor, or providing emotional support, leadership can look different in different contexts, and it is important to be flexible and adaptable.
I aspire to be a transformational leader—someone who inspires change and helps those around me reach their full potential. I have friends who are transformational leaders, driven by vision and determination, always striving to achieve their long-term goals. Seeing them in action inspires me because they recognize potential in others and guide them toward success. Transformational leaders focus on motivation and growth, helping people evolve both personally and professionally. I admire how they encourage others to chase their dreams and become the leaders they are meant to be. Transformational leaders create an environment where people feel empowered and supported, encouraging a sense of belonging and purpose within a team or organization. Their ability to uplift others not only fosters personal development but also cultivates a culture of collaboration and success. They inspire others to take risks, embrace challenges, and trust in their own capabilities.
Through the readings and discussions in this class, I have discovered that I align most with collaborative leadership. I enjoy gathering input from others and working together to find the best solutions. However, I have also learned that even when considering everyone’s perspectives, not all decisions will be universally accepted. Mistakes are inevitable, but they serve as valuable learning experiences that help us grow as individuals and leaders. I also appreciate that as a collaborative leader, I am not solely responsible for making decisions—I rely on the insights of others, recognizing that they may have ideas that lead to better outcomes. Collaboration brings a diverse range of thoughts and ideas to the table, and sometimes those ideas challenge my initial assumptions, leading to better decisions. It is crucial to approach decision-making with humility, knowing that the collective wisdom of a group can often lead to superior results than any one individual could achieve alone. "Collaborative leaders are known to empower and to set by example" (North Eastern University 2024). Additionally, collaborative leadership allows me to engage with students and peers, incorporating their thoughts to make the best choices for them. In doing so, I aim to create a space where others feel comfortable contributing, knowing their voices will be heard and valued.
Applying my leadership skills in the workplace will encourage open communication and foster an environment where input is valued. Listening to different perspectives will help me make informed decisions that benefit the team. When everyone feels included in the decision-making process, it creates a sense of ownership and commitment to the outcomes. This inclusive approach not only strengthens relationships within the team but also promotes a greater sense of accountability and responsibility. However, one challenge of collaborative leadership is the possibility of receiving backlash from colleagues who may not agree with the final decision. Not everyone will always be on board with the choices made, and dealing with differing opinions can be difficult. It's essential to approach these situations with empathy and understanding, acknowledging concerns and working toward common ground. The positive side, though, is that if a decision does not work out, we can reassess and find a better solution together. Collaborative leadership creates a culture of adaptability, continuous learning, and shared success.
One of the most significant benefits of being a collaborative leader is the ability to learn from others. Every person brings unique perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. As a leader, I can harness those diverse viewpoints to make decisions that consider a wider range of factors. It’s important to acknowledge that we don't have all the answers, and by leaning on the strengths of the team, we can create better, more innovative solutions. Collaborative leadership also helps build trust and respect within teams, as it shows that everyone’s input is valued and that the leader is approachable and open-minded. By empowering others and creating a collaborative atmosphere, leaders can foster stronger relationships, more effective teamwork, and an environment that thrives on shared ideas and goals.
Ultimately, the journey to becoming a collaborative leader is one of continuous growth and development. It’s about learning from both successes and failures, understanding the strengths of others, and continuously striving to improve oneself as a leader. Whether in the workplace, in the classroom, or in other areas of life, the principles of collaboration and open communication will always serve as the foundation for success. As I continue to develop my leadership skills, I look forward to embracing these challenges and opportunities, and to growing alongside the people I lead.
