Alternate PL - Call to Action
Let's continue to see the growth in teachers!

The Magic Behind Professional Learning
There must be a change to see growth.
My Why
My "WHY"' for creating this presentation is to help shift the way professional learning is approached. Professional learning should focus on fostering growth and mastery in our teachers. Without the necessary guidance and support, we risk staying in a fixed mindset rather than moving toward a growth mindset. "Professional learning should be a collaborative process, with teachers and leaders actively participating in the design, development, execution, and assessment of professional development" (Burns 2019). As an educator entering my seventh year of teaching, I’ve witnessed how quickly education continues to evolve. Now is the time to embrace change in our practices. The change begins with professional learning. When teachers feel empowered and supported, they are more likely to take risks, innovate, and grow. Ultimately, that growth leads to stronger outcomes for our students and a more dynamic, responsive classroom environment.

My What
The presentation, A New Model of Professional Learning, focuses on improving how professional learning (PL) is implemented at the high school level. It begins by addressing the common shortcomings of traditional PL models. However, it highlights five key concepts from Gulamhussein (2013) that emphasize the potential of effective PL and offer a framework for meaningful change. Additionally, the presentation incorporates insights from The Mirage (TNTP, 2015) and Daniels’ (2013) TED Talk to underscore that the issue isn't a lack of investment, but rather a misalignment with how adults learn best. By realigning PL with research-based practices, we can create experiences that are relevant, engaging, and impactful for educators. This shift is essential if we want to see lasting improvements in both teaching practices and student outcomes.
My How
In the presentation, I introduce Gulamhussein’s key concepts as a foundation for making professional learning (PL) more effective for educators. I’ve also incorporated Duarte’s presentation strategies and included speaker notes to guide me during the delivery. The goal of the presentation is to highlight how PL can be significantly improved when these research-based steps are taken into consideration. Ultimately, this approach supports educators in growing as individuals while continuously refining their craft in the classroom. When educators feel supported and see the value in PL, they are more likely to stay engaged and open to change. This shift not only benefits teachers but also creates a more dynamic and impactful learning environment for students.
